Fort Worth Home & Garden Market: Look For The Poster

Just a few minutes ago I received the poster for the 2010 Fall Fort Worth Home & Garden Market event (formerly known as the Fort Worth Home & Garden Show).

Here’s what is looks like:

Look for it when you visit businesses in Fort Worth.

Three Second Rule

When marketing your business in a live event, like a home, home and garden or garden show, something to always remember is the three second rule. This means you have three seconds to tell your prospects walking down the aisle:

  • What you do
  • Why they should talk with you and,
  • Who you are

Let’s look at each point in detail

What you do

This is the most important part of the message to communicate to your prospect. If you don’t clearly communicate to your prospects what you do they will pass on by without a second thought.

Can you describe what your company does for your client in one short sentence, phrase or even a couple word? Describe in emotional terms what your company does for your clients. Maybe something like “a new kitchen for you to create new memories”. Or how about “outdoor living areas created for your family to enjoy”.

Why they need to talk with you

You have to broadcast the signal from your emotional radio station, WIIFM (What’s In It For Me). Everyone, including you, is tuned it to this broadcast. This just means you’re sending the signal to your client of “I understand what you want” when they are considering doing business with you.

Who You Are

This is the last on the list because prospects are not so much interested in who you are, although it is important, but what you will do to help them get what they want.

Make sure you display you’re phone number and web site address bigger than your company name. If they connect with “What You Do” and then “Why Talk With You”, then the next logical step is how to contact you.

Remember the three second rule:

  • Tell What you do
  • Why they should talk with you and
  • Who you are

Whether marketing your business in live events, on your website, your literature and sales presentations, the three second rule applies. Break it and you’ll risk losing business to a competitor that “plays by the rules”

Home Improvement For 2010 According to American Express

Today I came accross a survey American Express conducted regading the future of consumer spending for home improvement.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Investment in Home Improvement
Eighty-five percent of homeowners consider their homes to be their most valuable asset and are more than twice as likely as renters to invest in home improvement projects this year (62% versus 24% respectively). Young professional (86%) and affluent (72%) homeowners will embark on these projects more so than the general population of homeowners this year. On average, across the three homeowner groups, the amount spent on property enhancements will be:

  • $6,200 among the general population
  • $6,100 among young professionals
  • $11,500 among affluents

The article contains a lot more statistics that are very interesting.

Let me know your thoughts.

Why Exhibit During a Recession?

Certain publications say we’re out of the recession. What do you think?

No doubt about it, we’re all feeling the effects of a slow economy. Some more than others. However, now is not the time to cut back on marketing! If your prospects don’t know you can help them, they won’t buy from you when they are ready.

Today I found an article called “Why Exhibit During a Recession? Trade Show Tip of the Week” posted on ExhibitResources.com. The article is short and it’s worth reading.

Here’s an excerpt:

According to a recent survey of Fortune 1,000 Chief Marketing Officers, meetings and events provide the highest return on investment of any marketing channel. According to a recent study by CEIR, the Center for Exhibit Industry Research, exhibitions and events remained at the top of MarCom spending, accounting for 20% of the budget despite reductions in overall marketing spending.

Take a look at the complete article and let me know what you think.
